Copley Innovators and Copley Engineers Take 2nd and 3rd Place at the SourceAmerica Design Challenge

Copley engineers  Copley Innovators

Congratulations to the Copley Innovators (Team Captain Hiba El Rassi and team members Kevin Du, Aaron Lampner, Colton Murray, Georgia Shay, Madeline Wiley), the Copley Engineers Team One (Team Captain Greg White and team members Chad Brown, Armando Consolacion, Sydney Demechko, Jacob Druga, Ryan McClaren, Jalen Serra), and Coach Mr. Harder on their 2nd and 3rd place finish at the National SourceAmerica High School Design Challenge. The annual SourceAmerica Design Challenge is a national engineering and technology competition that provides students an opportunity to address employment issues faced by people with disabilities. The CHS teams spent months designing two devices: the Delta Snap, which is an assistive machine that assembles salt-and-pepper grinder cap, and T.R.I.P.S. (Thermal Roll Industrial Paper Shredder), which is a machine that cuts and prepares thermal rolls for a shredding machine. Both devices increased the efficiency of the employees at the ProPak and SecurShred divisions of Weaver Industries by mechanizing a manual assembly process.

Out of 186 teams that entered the national competition, two of Copley’s engineering teams qualified for the top five teams selected, and competed in Washington D.C. on April 7, 2017 for 2nd and 3rd place. This is the third year that the CHS Engineering teams have participated, and each year the teams make it to the top five. Next year, Georgia Shay, who is currently a junior, will lead the team in future competitions that will benefit the employees at Weaver Industries. Mr. Harder has developed a first-rate engineering program that is focused on providing students real-world problem solving opportunities using 21st century skills and offering experiences to compete on a national level.
