May is Mental Health Awareness Month
During May we work as a community to raise awareness and educate the public about mental illnesses and reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illnesses. The theme for 2021 is “You are Not Alone.” You are Not Alone focused on the healing value of connecting in safe ways, prioritizing mental health and acknowledging that it is okay to not be okay.
April is World Autism Awareness Month
Autism awareness month officially launches on April 2nd which is a day of autism awareness across the world. This year the theme is committing to a kinder world. Individuals are invited to light up with kindness throughout the month, by helping create a world where all people with autism can reach their full potential.
Down Syndrome World Awareness Day is March 21
Did you know that Down Syndrome—a disorder that occurs when there is a duplication of the twenty-first chromosome—affects approximately 6,000 babies at birth every year? So on March 21—a date chosen to represent the chromosomal defection found in Down Syndrome (the twenty-first day of the third month)— we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, an event created to raise public awareness, promote inclusivity, encourage advocacy, and support the wellbeing of those living with Down Syndrome.
March - May 2021
Throughout the entire year the Pupil Services Department works to promote a culture of caring. The months of March, April, and May an additional emphasis is placed on understanding diversity and inclusion of all students. Over the next several months, students will be engaging in special activities and classroom guidance lessons to promote this culture of caring and inclusion.
Suicide Prevention Day
Suicide is a topic that is both extremely difficult to talk about, and one that we can't afford to ignore. Among high school students, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death. Four out of five young people who attempt suicide show clear warning signs beforehand. This means that we can look out for each other and help prevent suicide. If a friend or classmate just isn’t acting like themselves, if their mood or behavior has changed, they’re withdrawing from friends, or they’re making statements about feeling hopeless or helpless; they could be thinking about suicide. The best way you can support them is to help them talk to a trusted adult as soon as possible, such as their parents or a school counselor. If you or someone you know needs immediate assistance, the emergency resources below are available 24/7.
