School Health Services
Children spend the majority of their time in school. Research has shown if students are not healthy, their ability to reach academic potential is affected. To help meet the diverse healthcare needs, The Copley-Fairlawn City Schools contracts with Akron Children's School Hospital. Akron Children's School Health Services provides all our schools with school nurses and medical assistants. The medical assistants are supervised by our District School Nurse, Amy Banfield. Please contact Ms. Banfield with any medical concerns at 330-664-4990.
Akron Children's School Health Services provides the nursing staff within your school district. Our highly trained and experienced nursing staff are here to help keep your child stay healthy at school. Here's what we do:- We take care of small injuries and check if your child is too sick to stay in school based on established medical guidelines.
- If your child needs medicine, we make sure they take it safely and follow the doctor’s orders.
- We help students with health issues like diabetes, asthma, or allergies by making sure they're comfortable in school. Last year alone, our nursing staff administered over 10,000 treatments in 205 schools to students with these conditions.
- We're here for you if you're worried about your child's health or need help locating a doctor. Last school year we helped more than 500 families in our service area, find primary or specialty care providers for their kids.
- We work with your school to create plans for emergencies or accidents with prompt and appropriate responses.
- Our nursing staff provides educational programs and hands-on training to students, teachers and staff so they know how to stay safe and what to do if someone is hurt or has a medical emergency.
- Keeping up with vaccinations is important and we help make sure your child gets what they need to stay healthy and strong. We’ve helped to increase adolescent school required immunization rates in the schools we serve, from 76% to 80% in the last school year.
- We're not just about treating illness; we're about preventing it too. Through health education and support, we help students develop healthy habits and stay ready to learn. Last year, 92% of students cared for in our school nursing clinics were able to have their needs met and return to their classroom.
