Copley High School’s student-run newspaper, The Drumbeat, received a First Place rating at the 2011-12 Ohio Scholastic Media Association’s spring conference. Prior to the state contest, held at Kent State University on April 22, The Drumbeat staff attended workshops in the fall and submitted the newspaper, as well as individual articles, to the competition. The newspaper is judged on several categories, including: quality of written work, layout, photography, and ethics.
This award is testament to the hard work and countless hours put in by the following students: Editor in chief, senior Taylor Powell; news editor, junior Taylor Beard; feature editors, sophomore LaQuisha Hilton and junior Amy Smith; entertainment editor, sophomore Kayla Miller; layout editor, junior Iman AbdoulKarim; sports editors, juniors Austin Aten and Derek Brown; and photography editor, junior Terriona Morgan. Several of these students also won individual awards for their articles. The class is advised by Ms. Sarah Petry.
