Welcome to the Copley- Fairlawn City School Comprehensive Guidance Program! I am Pamela Long-Rice, your elementary school counselor offering services for Arrowhead, Fort Island, and Herberich Elementary schools.

Parents & Students: this year we are continuing to learn and use the principles from the book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids by Sean Covey. We want to implement a common language between our students, within our school, and hopefully throughout our community, based on the proven principle-based leadership skills found in Dr. Stephen R. Covey's best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The 7 principles that not only children, but people of all ages can benefit from implementing in their lives are:  1. Be Proactive, 2. Begin with the End in Mind, 3. Put First Things First, 4. Think Win-Win, 5. Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood, 6. Synergize, 7. Sharpen the Saw.

If you are interested in implementing these habits at your home as well as here at school, I highly recommend purchasing this best-selling book. It can be read just by the student or by a whole family - everyone will benefit!

Guidance Mission Statements:

Our mission is to provide a comprehensive guidance program that will support all students in attaining the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to become successful students, responsible citizens, productive workers, and lifelong learners. To ensure that every student achieves his or her fullest academic, social, personal, and career potential in a safe and student-centered learning environment. The program’s ultimate goal is for students to master the competencies necessary to be able to make self-directed, realistic and responsible decisions and to be successful contributors to society.

Guidance Philosophy:

A Comprehensive Guidance Program is an integral part of the district's overall program for students. It is both preventative and proactive in its application and supports the district goal that each student will acquire the skills, attitudes and knowledge necessary for their growth. We believe in the educational philosophy of Copley-Fairlawn City Schools and are committed to developing the physical, mental, social and personal development of all students working together towards lifelong success and effective, responsible citizenship in a diverse and changing world.

Counseling services:

The counseling Department in our schools offer individual and group counseling to all students. Students can meet with the school counselor on an individual basis as needed to address various concerns. The counseling Department also implements a group counseling program where students can talk about different issues or concerns in a group setting, which is led by the school counselor. We also offer a group counseling program that is geared towards new students. All new students have the opportunity to meet with one another and peers in his/her own grade level to talk about moving and/or adjusting to a new school. Each participant is encouraged to make a personal poster which is displayed near the student’s classroom so that others can meet and learn about the new student too.
