A Message From the Assistant Principals

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! With summer break now behind us, we look forward to what will be another success year at Copley High School. The new year also signifies a new beginning for many in our school. We recently welcomed our freshmen class and other new students to the building as they and their parents participated in our annual orientation event. Our outstanding band, athletic teams and academic programs will all have started a new season of competition by the end of the month. As you are now aware, we are both new to our positions at the high school. Tim comes to us from Heritage Middle School in Painesville and is beginning his seventh year as an administrator. Matt has spent his entire 17-year career as a proud science teacher at CHS. Both of us are excited about the upcoming year and are looking forward to working with the Copley High School staff, students, parents and community as we serve "Every child, every day."

In addition, we would like to welcome many new staff members to our high school. They bring to our students a unique blend of experience, intelligence, character, and compassion. They all place student success and safety as their highest priorities and will no doubt contribute vastly to our students’ enriching educational experiences. Please welcome to our team:

Denise Cirino, Director of Pupil Services

Debbie Hermann, Tutor

Caitlyn Kowalski, School Psychologist

Finally, our new grading scale goes into effect this school year. Copley High School initiated a study of its former grading practices in February with the goal of updating the system of grading and academic recognition to one that would be research-based, that could meet the current needs of our school and community, and that would allow students to be competitive in terms of college acceptance and scholarship attainment in their post-secondary education in Ohio and across the country. To accomplish this task, meetings were held with parents, teachers and students, as well as presenting to the Board of Education at the March meeting. The following is the complete description of our grading system for the 2012-13 school year:

Grading Scale: The current grading scale will be modified, whereas a student has an equal chance to earn an A, B, C and/or D.

A: 92-100
B: 83-91
C: 74-82
D: 65-73
F: 0-64

Weighting of Honors/AP: Students enrolled in Honors courses will now receive a 0.5 bump in GPA when they earn passing grade in an honors course. AP Courses will continue to receive a 1.0 bump in GPA.

Class Rank: Class rank will be determined from student GPA including weighted credit for Honors and Advanced Placement coursework. In addition to honoring the top 5% of our students and Valedictorian at Commencement, a Salutatorian will also be honored starting with the class of 2013. These honored positions will be determined by class rank only.

Reporting Grades on Interims, Report Cards and Transcripts: Students will be issued percentage grades on all interim and report cards (i.e. 94%) instead of a letter grade. The semester average on the report card and transcript will be reported as a percentage beginning with the 2012-13 school year. Previous years will not be converted to percentage and will remain as letter grades.

Semester Grade Determination: The semester grade is calculated by using a weighted average and is a continuation of the former policy. Each Quarter Grade carries a 37.5% weight (3/8) and the Semester Exam carries a 25% weight (1/4). Two methods for calculating a semester grade are provided below:

Method 1

Formula

Example

Grade % for Quarter

x 0.375

93%

x 0.375 =

34.88%

Grade % for Quarter

x 0.375

Grade % for Exam

x 0.250

x 0.250 =

20.75%

Final Semester Grade

= 87.88%

= 88% (rounded) = B

Method 2

Formula

Example

Grade % for Quarter

x 3

Final Semester Grade= Total Points

divided by 8

703 divided by 8 = 87.88%

= 88% (rounded) = B

Minimum Failing Grade: A minimum failing percentage will be enacted for a student earning a 55% or lower for a given quarter and/or exam. A student earning a 55% or lower for a given quarter and/or exam will be given a 56% on his/her report card for semester grade calculation purposes. This is a requirement of the percentage system. A student must continue to pass two of three categories (quarter grade, quarter grade, exam grade) to earn credit for a semester course, regardless of point total.

Rounding: Final quarter, exam, and semester grades will be rounded to the one’s place. The following scale will be utilized:

Unrounded Grade Scale

Equivalent Rounded Grade Scale

A 91.50-100.00

Code of Conduct Highlights

Our administrative team would like to take this opportunity to highlight a few items in the student code of conduct. Your emphasis to your child helps us insure that we maintain a safe, secure, learning environment at Copley High School.

The Copley High School faculty and administration feels strongly that good attendance and punctuality are essential to academic achievement and that they also prepare students to be successful in life after school. The attendance policies of Copley High School have been established to set reasonable expectations for attendance that will insure the appropriate, active involvement of students and help them to attain their educational goals. Tardiness is defined as being less than 10 minutes late to any class. After 10 minutes the absence from class will be considered a class cut (see rule 9). All students must be on time to school and class. If a student is not on time, the following consequences will occur:

Tardy to School

  • 3rd Tardy – Office Warning
  • 4th – 6th Tardy – Friday Detention
  •  7th and 8th Tardy – 1-3 days I.S.A.P.
  • 9th Tardy and Subsequent Tardies – Loss of driving/parking privilege – 3 days of OSS (Failure to serve a Friday Detention will result in a 3 day OSS) (Students may be offered the option of riding the bus as an alternative to suspension for tardies to school.)

Tardy to Class

  • 2nd Tardy – Teacher Warning
  • 3rd and 4th Tardy – Teacher assigns a detention for each tardy
  • 5th Tardy and Subsequent Tardies – a Disciplinary Referral will be sent to the Assistant Principal and a Friday Detention will be assigned. ( Friday Detention will result in 3 days OSS)

Dress Code Highlights

  • Dresses, skirts, or shorts must be fingertip length
  • Legging, jeggings and tights are not considered a pant alone
  • Students are not permitted any type of hat, headband or bandana. All hats must be kept in your locker from 7:25-2:25 (except for documented religious reasons)
  • Pants are not permitted to be ripped, torn or damaged
  • Pants must be worn at the waist
  • Shoes must be worn at all times
  • Students are not permitted to wear muscle shirts or tank tops with spaghetti straps (2 fingers wide at the shoulder)
  • No chains, studs, etc.

Electronic Devices

  • Electronic devices should be turned off and put away during school hours.
  • They may be confiscated if seen by an adult. The school and district are not responsible for lost or stolen electronic devices.
  • If you have an emergency phone call please refrain from texting or calling your child on his/her cell phone. Please phone the main office and we will notify your child to call home immediately.

Food and Beverages

Please remind students that food, drink, and snacks are only permitted in the cafeteria unless a student is participating in a teacher-sanctioned activity.

Only bottled water is permitted outside of the cafeteria and is to be a clear container. Students are not to have coffee, soda, energy drinks, juice boxes, etc. outside of the cafeteria.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up

At this time, we would like to remind everyone of the morning drop off and evening pick up procedures. Using the entrance nearest to the loop in the front of the building not only causes traffic congestion but also opens us up to the potential for a serious accident as school staff are entering the lot and parents dropping off are turning around in the side lot. Students who are repeatedly being dropped off in this location may be subject to disciplinary consequences. Your cooperation is needed in order to ensure our staff’s safety when arriving and departing from school, but more so the safety of our students who are passengers in our school busses which use this entrance when arriving at school. Students need to be dropped off and picked up in the lower parking lot near the pool doors. Below is a map illustrating our buildings procedure for dropping off and picking up students.

              Morning Drop-Off:

A.    Buses enter the Circle through Gate #1 and drop off by the FRONT doors.

B.     Parents dropping their students off utilize Gate #4, the western gate near the football stadium.

C.     Drop off will be by the POOL DOORS ONLY.

D.    Student drivers will enter the Student Lot through Gates #3 & #4.

§  Please do NOT use Gate #3 as a short cut to drop off students.

E.     Gate #2 is ONE WAY from 6:45 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.

Afternoon Pick-Up:

A.    Parents picking up enter Gate # 1 to utilize the east side doors by faculty lot.

B.     Buses utilize the center circle in front of the school.

C.     Students turning left leave out Gate #3 which will be open after school.

D.     Students turning right exit Gate #4

Student parking

This year we would like to ask the parents of our drivers to emphasize safe driving in our parking lot. Students should follow the posted speed limit of 15 miles per hour at all times. Students driving to school are expected to follow all rules associated with driving to school. Students not following these rules are subject to a revocation of parking privilege ranging from one week to one year along with other disciplinary conse-quences based upon the severity of their infraction.

On behalf of all of us at Copley High School, we want to express our enthusiasm for the start of a new year. We are devoted and committed to providing the most complete and comprehensive educational experience to our students. We look forward to meeting you all throughout the school year and please feel free to con-tact us at any time.

Let’s Have a Great Year!
