Coach Rhoades--Golf |

|
When Copley girls golf coach Bill Rhoades played high school golf in Pittsburgh, he had no idea he'd ever coach the sport. "I had interests in other sports, too," Rhoades said. "Even now I help coach baseball in the spring. I was surprised when people at Copley asked me to coach a girls golf team from virtual scratch three years ago." And now Rhoades is being honored as The Plain Dealer's Girls Golf Coach of the Year. Copley played girls golf as a club sport for two years under Rhoades before he became coach of the official varsity squad three years ago. The Lady Indians became a state power in a hurry in the fall, going 12-1 in dual matches and winning a sectional tournament title before placing third at district and fifth at state. They were the only school to place ahead of state champion Walsh Jesuit in a regular-season tournament, doing so at the Turkeyfoot Invitational. "I can't be any prouder of these girls. They've worked so hard on their games," Rhoades said. "I'm a very lucky man to be coaching these girls." Rhoades majored in education at the University of Akron. Pat Galbincea |
