2007-2008 National Merit Semi-FinalistCongratulations Apoorv Khandelwal 2007-2008 Commended StudentsCongratulations: Heather Arison Copley High School announced that senior Apoorv Khandelwal is one of 16,000 high school seniors who are Semifinalists in the 53rd National Merit Scholarship Program. Apoorv will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth about $33 million to be offered in the spring of 2008. The 16,000 Semifinalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program were designated from some 14 million program entrants in over 21,000 high schools nationwide. Students entered the competition by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), used by NMSC as an initial screen of entrants. Representing less than 1 % of each state’s high school seniors, Semifinalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state, and they are the only participants who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered next spring. Before they can be considered for Merit Scholarship awards, Semifinalists must advance to the finalist level of the competition by fulfilling additional requirements that include having an outstanding academic record, being endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and submitting SAT I scores that confirm the student’s earlier PSAT/NMQST performance. Other important information about the student’s educational interests and goals, as well as participating and leadership in school and community activities is provided in the detailed scholarship application the Semifinalist and an official of the high school must complete. NMSC will announce the 2007 Merit Scholarship recipients beginning next April. Congratulations, Apoorv! Copley High School is pleased to announce that seniors HEATHER ARISON, RACHELE GALLO, SIRI HIREMATH, AARON HITMAR, RACHEL STEVENSON, AND JOULIA SHUK have been named Commended Students in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program. The Principal will present a letter of commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conduct the program, to Heather, Rachele, Siri, Aaron, Rachel, and Joulia. Some 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for this exceptional academic promise, although they will not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to be offered next spring. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the 2008 Merit Programs by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Congratulations, Heather, Rachele, Siri, Aaron, Rachel, and Joulia!
