Speech and Debate Team

 

2007-2008 School Year

Congratulation to the Copley Speech and Debate team over the weekend at Barberton (January 6, 2008).  Leading the team with a first place in Orginal was Megan Smeznik.  Kasey Klein came in 5th in Oratorical.  Siri Hiremath and Anisha Mehta came in 3rd in Duo Interp.  Alex Kotran came in 3rd in Public Forum debate.  A wonderful showing by the entire team.
 
Reminder, there will be a meeting for all members of the speech team tomorrow(tuesday 1-8) in Mrs. Straton's room at 7.  Please be there.

On Saturday, December 1, 2007, the Copley Speech and Debate team came in 10th place out of 30 schools.  Leading the was was Sariha Moyen coming in 5th place in Oratorical Interpretation.  Also helping the team was Alex Stopar in Humor, Debbie Chen in Drama, Caroline Wang and Kim Crowley in Duo, and Sarah Helfer in Prose Poetry.  The Debaters had a good weekend, with everyone having a 2-2 record.  Good Luck to the team as they get ready for tournaments at GlenOak and McKinley this upcoming weekend.

On Saturday, November 17th, 2007, the Copley Speech and Debate team came in 7th at our own tournament out of 23 registered schools.  3 of those schools have won 8 of the past 10 State Championships.  Not too bad for the Copley team.  Caroline Wang and Kim Crowly finished 3rd in Duo Interpretation, Sariha Moyen finished 6th in Oratorical Interpretation.  Helping Copley with scoring were Joulia Shuk in International Extemp, Megan Smeznik in Original, Kasey Klein in Oratorical, and Ryanaustin Denis in Drama.

 
Team members are reminded of the morning meeting Tuesday, November 20th, 2007 at 7:00 a.m. in Mrs. Straton's room.  If you are not able to make the meeting, turn in your candle sales to Shannon's mail box.

The speech and debate team completed a successful season by holding its annual awards dessert on April 27. There, Chen Yan received the award for “Most Valuable Speaker,” Robert Makishi was awarded the “Coaches’ Award,” and Emily Hoffman was named “Outstanding Leader.” Robert, Chen, and Emily all received the famous ”Copley chairs” as awards for four years of excellence. At the team’s final meeting on May 22, Siri Hiremath was elected president of next year’s team. Vice president will be Anisha Mehta. The recording secretary is Joulia Shuk, corresponding secretary will be Reshmi Mehta, and sergeant-at arms will Ryanaustin Dennis. This year’s team, which was named the “Leading Chapter”of the Eastern Ohio district of the National Forensic League, will have 25 returning members for next year.
