May 2008- Fairlawn-Bath Library Book Sale- I went to the Fairlawn Library Book sale couple days ago. I sat with about 4 other keyclub people and simply counted the number of books people were going to buy. Depending on whether it was hardback or paperback or CD, we counted, added up the cost, and did the process over again. I actually ended up getting 3 books myself for 75 cents. Then the librarians provided pizza and drinks for us. It was a good experience to be there.

3/14/08- Family Fun Night- Family Fun Night at Fort Island is one of the year's best events for Key Club- it's fun, not too long, and you're always doing something. Family Fun Night is a selection of carnival-style games that children of all ages can earn prizes at. I manned the Duck Pond game, the one where you pick up a duck from a pond and look at the number underneath it. If it's an odd number, you get a prize, and if it's an even number... you get an equally satisfying prize. It's a bit laughable to some, yes, but of course it's so that none of the kids feel left out. Other games do have bigger prizes based on skill, though (at least, last year they did; I worked one of those events). Anyway, there were a lot of people who showed up, both Key Clubbers and kids. I would definitely recommend doing this project next year.

2/27/08- Winter Social: Game Night- Our Winter Social progressed as planned, even though it conflicted with the Boy's Basketball tournament game. It came as no surprise then, combined with the general nastiness of the weather, that attendance was a bit short. That didn't stop any of us from having fun, however. The majority of us played a huge game of Apples to Apples, a game where you match cards with various people, places, or objects on them to a given adjective. The person in charge of the adjective card picks the best response, whether it makes perfect sense, is funny, or makes NO sense whatsoever. Not to brag, but I was the early leader. At least, until Karlie Graf wiped the floor with everyone, winning a total of eight rounds. The event went on longer than planned, but that's because everybody enjoyed it immensely.

12/19/07- Making Blankets (Holiday Meeting)- Our holiday meeting was filled with fun and cheer, and we had a good time making the blankets, made by simply cutting and tying knots. There was also food there (including candy canes, of course), to munch on. All in all, around 5 blankets were made for the Lauren's Legacy project, which will go to the Akron's Children's Hospital. The event lasted for almost two hours, and was a lot of fun for our last 2007 meeting.

12/03/2007 - ACME Salvation Army Bell Ringing- At 3p.m., Brian and I arrived at ACME and we began ringing the bells given to us by Key Club people before us. One of the members of the Kiwanis came to ring the bell with us. For an hour, we talked and said thank you to people who donated money. There were actually a lot of people who donated. We had fun messing around with the bells.

Fall Social: Key Club Bonfire- This is done every year, and this year it was held at Graf Growers, as opposed to Boughton farms, Paige Boughton having graduated from CHS. About twenty people attended, including me, and we all had pizza, followed by a 'mummy wrapping' contest, in which we decked out a member of a four- person team with rolls of toilet paper. It was hard because the paper kept tearing, but our team won anyway. A hayride through the farm was next, and we all fit in one wagon this time. After that, we settled around the fire while making S'mores. I'm kinda disappointed that more people didn't come, as in past years.

10/13/07- Fairlawn-Bath Library Book Sale- This book sale, which is bi-annual, is held to sell various books of which the library doesn't need anymore. This was my third time doing this particular event, the other two times being during the fall and spring of last year. There are actually multiple days which you can come: Wednesday and Thursday to set up, Saturday to do the actual sale. Our job was to tally up people's books and costs. A pizza lunch was included, and we had a great time. I actually ended up staying for the full seven hours on Saturday, and was impressed at how well this sale went compared to the others. Early in the morning, there wasn't any room to even move. I was trying to get back and forth from the table, and I remember having to stand in one place for minutes at a time because the place was so crowded. In the afternoon, though, it was not uncommon for us to have some downtime, spent playing simple games like Tic-Tac-Toe. All the books left over at the end fit easily on one cart, which was REALLY amazing compared to the other two times I worked there. I'll probably do it again this spring. Curse my inability to try anything new.

Key Club Newsletter
The Key Club Newsletter, made by Amanda, Stacy, and Lauren, comes out periodically with event writeups and other fun stuff. The first one was given out at the December 12th meeting.

Ohio District Convention
DCON is held annually, and is a
great way to meet other key clubbers from all over Ohio. And meet them we
did, for over 400 members attended the convention in the Hyatt Regency
hotel/ convention center in Columbus. From our club, 7 members went. Our
current leadership, Hannah, Monica, Jake, and Josh; some past leadership,
Karlie and Alyssa. And then there's me.
>>The Key Club Convention Pin. It says 'Service Through the Cinemas 2008'
across the black banner. On the top of the red outside circle, 'Rolling Out
The Red Carpet'. On the bottom, 'Ohio District'.
We left school early Friday to travel to Hyatt Regency. After check-in and
convention registration, we headed down to the river near our hotel, and
then to
Starbucks to just chill until the kick-off session at 7 PM in the hotel
ballroom, where all the district officers were introduced. The speaker
chosen to kick off the convention was Mr. Bill Gladwell, a 'psychological
illusionist'. Hypnotism, in short. He chose about 15 people to come up on
the stage to get hypnotized, and anybody in the audience could do it. Thus,
Josh and Monica both tried to get hypnotized, but both gave up before the
end. On stage, Mr. Gladwell was getting the people on stage to do crazy
things like pretending they loved the person next to them one second, then
smelling a strange stench from them the next. I don't really buy into that
kind of stuff (and there was a number of small details I noticed that
supported that theory), but you couldn't deny it was funny nonetheless.
After that, we had a spirit rally, which consisted of three events. Jake was
chosen to represent our group in musical chairs, however, he was the first
one to drop out. Our team (the black team) ended up not winning a single
thing. That pretty much ended the kick-off, and rolled straight into... a
dance? Yes, the first dance of the weekend. I'm not the dancing type,
really, but I wasn't the only one. I stayed until nearly the end, pretending
to look like I could dance by merely swinging to the rhythm. I think I got
through that all right.
The next day started out with breakfast (of course), and more 'professional
stuff', including the presentation of awards. All of our 2007-2008 officers
won a distinguished officer certificate and ribbon, and Amanda Bouffard
scored one for Bulletin Editor. The absence of a Distinguished Webmaster
award has yet to be looked into. After that was all over with (including the
caucus, where we heard candidate speeches), we attended the various forums
available. The first session forums dealt with leadership positions (as well
as Bulletin Editors, Webmasters and PR. I went to that one, of course). The
second and third sessions dealt with various issues in the club, like
running for higher offices, and Key Leader. I went to the forums on creative
projects, and Key Club recruitment (Incidentally, expect to see more on new
member recruitment soon; we agreed it was one of our priorities after we
found out about a school that had 200 Key Clubbers out of a school our size.
There was also a school that had 200 Key Clubbers out of 600 students). We
had pizza in the hotel food court after that (well, anything we wanted,
actually, but most chose pizza), and one member of another club beckoned me
to sit with her. The others from our club told me to ask her to the dance,
but can you really ask a person to dance that has crutches? I always thought
it would have been a touchy topic for them... Anyway, after we all ate
lunch, it was time for the fourth and final forum session... hold your
breath, it's a... Salsa dancing forum! Yes, your webmaster (and Jake and
Josh) learned the basics of salsa dancing that day. It's actually not THAT
hard, and it's kind of fun.
After that we had a whole 3 hours of chill time in our rooms. Or rather, we
spent most of the time talking in the hallway. Next up was dinner, and then
more 'professional stuff' mixed with the talent competition. Some unique
stuff there. Anyway, that rolled into the SECOND dance of the weekend, the
Governor's Ball, which was fully a formal dance. I could go off in a few
different directions about this dance, but I'll just say we all had fun that
night, and at the risk of being too blunt, leave it at that.
The last day came, breakfast and even more 'professional stuff', including
the introduction of the new district leadership, and the introduction of the
international convention. That was basically it, really. We won a service
project award for Lauren's Legacy, too. The governor called the convention
closed, and that was the entire convention! It was really a fun time, and
possibly a candidate for my best weekend ever. Heck, I could probably say it
WAS my best weekend ever.
